Obertauern has plenty of atmospheric mountain huts dotted around the ski area serving traditional Austrian fare – stay long enough and many of them become après spots later on in the day. In town it has long majored on traditional dining options in the hotels, but the scene has expanded to include pizza, burger and steak restaurants too.
The Lazy Flamingo
With an American-inspired menu of burgers and wraps and an interior that’s designed to transport guests back to a classic 60s diner, The Lazy Flamingo in the centre of the town has a focus on friendly service and good times off the hill.
Serving a diverse menu of souped up burgers including a surf & turf and a version with truffle, along with imaginative sharing plates and flammkuchen, the Peakini Clubhouse combines a modern vibe with traditional farmhouse styling. Food also, as the name suggests, comes with a hip soundtrack.
The place to go for the best steak in town, with an 800°C infrared grill, Grill800º, located in the hotel Marietta, majors on high-quality meat from around the world. There are also fish and chicken dishes on the menu, along with salads, and a small but mouthwatering selection of desserts. At lunchtime it also serves burgers and pasta.
On the mountain
Known locally as “Flu”, Gasthof Flubachalm has been owned by the Geringer family since 1936. It provides homely cooking with dishes such as home-made cheese dumpling soup, and spinach dumplings with butter and parmesan cheese.
Home to two restaurants – a self-service and a table service (Krings-Stuberl) Krings Alm serves traditional Austrian mountain food such as Tiroler grostl and knodl tris (trio of spinach, nut-cheese and meat dumpling with green salad). It has a large terrace, which tends to become crowded on sunny days.
Everything from soups and snacks, steaks and burgers to traditional dishes such as Wiener schnitzel, germknödel (dough balls filled with spiced plum jam and served with melted butter) and apfelstrudel is served at the Lürzer Alm. The ambience is lively and the mountain hut becomes one of the main après hubs during the afternoons.
